否定構文 :

   ①not, never, noなどの否定語

   ②hardly, scarcely[ほとんど~ない(程度]

     ただし、hardly ever, scarcely everrarely, seldomと同意で

     めったに~ない」の意味で頻度を表す。

   ③rarely, seldom[めったに~ない(頻度],few, littleなどの準否定語を含む文。

   〔注意〕almost, nearlyは、「ほとんど・危うく~するところ」の意味で、否定の意味が含まれない。

1little + 不可算名詞 / few +可算名詞(ほとんど~がない)                      

(cf) a little +不可算名詞 / a few+可算名詞(少しは~がある)

 There is very little water left in the vase.花瓶にはほとんど水が残っていない。

   (2)①not a little ~ (少なからず・大いに)

             I was not a little surprised at the news.

       not a few ~ / quite a few ~(かなり多くの)

             Not a few passengers were on the train.  かなりの乗客が乗っていた

      (cfall but ~ =almost~(ほとんど)

             He was all but dead. = He was almost dead.

   (3)①no +名詞(1つも~ない)

             ・He has no friend(s) here. = He doesn’t have any friends here.

     ②be no +名詞(決して~ではない・~どころではない)

            ・He is no fool. = He is clever.

            (cf) He is not a fool.(ただ否定の意味で「彼は馬鹿ではない。」)

          be no +形容詞+名詞(決して~ではない・~だなんてとんでもない)

           ・This is no easy problem. =This is a difficult problem.

4not ~ any = no ~  〔注意〕☞any ~ notの語順はない

      He can’t stay here any longer. = He can no longer stay here.

      (No one [Nobody] can go there. Anyone can’t go there.とはいえない)     

   ・on no account(決して~ない) (=not/never ~ on any account)

5not ~ at all / not ~ in the least / no ~ whatever(全く~ない・少しも~ない)= not a bit

      I couldn’t make myself understood in English at all.英語で用が足せなかった。

      I’m not afraid of them in the least.

      I had no intention whatever of marrying her.結婚しようというつもりは全くない。

   ・There can be no doubt whatever about it.それについては何の疑問もありえない。

      (cf)Is there any chance whatever of his recovery?

彼の回復する可能性は少しでもあるのでしょうか。

   ・I’m not in the least anxious about it.それについて私はまったく心配していない。

  〔注意〕at allは疑問文では、「一体・そもそも」に、

      条件文では「仮に・卑しくも」の意味になる。

      Why should I pay at all?一体、なぜ私が払わなければならないのか。

      You have to study hard if you want to pass the exam at all.仮にも合格したいのなら、

6no ~ but… / never ~ but SV~すれば…必ずする)

      It never rains but it pours. = It never rains without pouring.降れば[必ず]土砂ぶり。

      There is no mother but loves her own childen.

          =There is no mother who doesn’t love her own childen.

          = Every mother loves her own children. 自分の子どもを愛さない母親はいない。

(7)nowithout ~ing /never [can’t] …without ~ing /~すれば…必ずする)

 =Whenever SV, ~ / Every time when SV, ~

      I never see this picture without remembering my school day.

          (~を見ると必ず…を思い出す。

          =This picture (always) reminds me of my school days.

          = Whenever I see this picture, I remember my school days.

          =Every time when I see this picture, I remember my school days.

   ・A typhoon never hits the island without causing damage.

          =Whenever a typhoon hits the island, it causes damage.

          =Every time when a typhoon hits the island, it causes damage.

            台風がその島を襲うと、必ず被害をもたらす。

8never fail to do(必ず~する)

   ・He never fails to read a newspaper before breakfast.朝食前に必ず新聞を読む。

9on no account(どうしても~ない)

     On no account would he listen to me.どうしても私の言うことを聞こうとしない。)  

10no more (もうこれ以上~ない= not any more)

    / no longer (もはや~ない=not ~ any longer)

     I want to walk no more. =I don’t want to walk any more.

     She is no longer a mere child. = She is not a mere child any longer.

11by no means / in no way / in no sense / on no account

    / under no circumstances / anything but ~ / no ~ what(so)ever

    / far from ~/ at no time(決して~ない)

  It is by no means easy to satisfy everyone.みんなを満足させることは容易ではない。

  ・These chairs are by no means satisfactory. They are just not good enough.

        これらの椅子は決して満足できるようなものではない。それで十分とはとてもいえない。

    You are in no way to blame.君は決して悪くはない。

    He is anything but a scholar.学者どころではない。/ 決して学者ではない。

  ・At no time in my life have I been busier tha I am today.(強制倒置)

    He is far from (being) happy.決して幸せではない。

13cannot help ~ing / cannot [help] but do ~せずにはいられない)

    I can’t help falling love with her. / I can’t [help] but fall in love with her.

       (好きにならずにはいられない。

          I don’t want to go there if I can help it.できればそこへは行きたくない。

14cannot ~ too [enough] …(いくら~してもし過ぎることはない)

  ・We cannot be too careful about our health.健康にはいくら注意してもし過ぎることはない。

      =We can never/hardly too careful about our health.

      =We cannot be careful enough about our health.

  ・The importance of education cannot be stressed enough.

          教育の重要性はいくら強調しても、し過ぎることはない。

15have no choice but to do / There is nothing for it but to do(するより仕方がない)

    I have no choice but to obey the rule. / There is nothing for it but to obey the rule.

16nothing but =only

    onlyの位置 

   ①修飾する語や語句の直前直後 

   ②口語では主語を修飾する場合の除き、一般動詞の直前、be動詞や助動詞の直後 

   (cf)anything but=never, far from ~決してない

    He is nothing but a child. =He is only a child.ただの子どもだ。

    Nothing but a désert was to be seen in the distance.

       (遠方には砂漠以外に何も見えなかった。

17not ~ until [till] …(…まで~しない / …して初めて~する)

         =It is[was] not until[till] … that ~

     ・We don’t realize the value of youth until we get old.

                      年をとって初めて、若さの価値に気づく。

  ・They didn’t arrive until the party was almost over.

        =It was not until the party was almost over that they arrived.

18It won’t be long before(まもなく~するだろう / ~するまで長くないだろう)=Soon ~.

  ・He was the last person I had expected to find there.

    (彼をそこで見つけるとは予想だにしなかった。

 (21remain to be done / be[have] yet to be done    まだ~されていない

  ・Most of the job is complete, but a few things remain to be done.

    ・I seldom/rarely eat out.めったに外食しない。

    ・He seldom/rarely comes to see me now.今ではめったに会いに来ない。

    ・It was so dark that I could hardly/scarcely see.ほとんど見えなかった。

  ○否定語と付加疑問文:

rarely, seldomめったに~しない/ hardly, scarcelyほどんど~しないを用いた文は

否定語の扱いをする。

      ・We rarely see each other, do we?私たちはお互いにめったにお目にかかりませんね。
