分詞構文+(particípial constrúction)

        「従節の主語」と「2つの文をつなぐ接続詞」を取り除いて、 

現在分詞(~ing)を使って表す文。 

~ingが「ので・とき・ならば・だけれど・しながら・そして・しかし」など、

  時(when, while)・原因・理由(because, as, since)・譲歩(though, although)・条件(if)・付帯状況を表す。 

    〔例1When Tom opened the box, he found something moving there.           

          〔接続詞のWhenを取り、openopeningに。後の文の主語heTomにする。〕 

          Opening the box, Tom found something moving there.  

          トムはその箱を開けると、何かがそこで動いているのが分かった。) 

    〔例2As Tom didn’t know the place, he couldn’t get there.             

          〔接続詞Asを取り、didn’tNotに、knowknowingに。主語のTomを後の文に移動する。〕 

          Not knowing the place, Tom he couldn’t get there.  

          トムはその場所を知らなかったのでそこへ行けなかった。) 

    〔例3As I have never been there, I’m looking forward to visiting there. 

           〔接続詞Asを取り、havehavingに。neverは文のはじめに移動する。〕     

          Never having been there, I’m looking forward to visiting there. 

    〔例4As Tom didn’t study last night, he has some difficulties in the exam now. 

          〔接続詞Asを取り、didn’tNotにして文のはじめに。

        ふつうなら、studiedstudyingにするのですが、前後2つの動詞の時制が異なっているので、

           studiedhaving studiedにする。〕 

          Not having studied last night, he has some difficulties in the exam now. 

    〔例5The train left Tokyo at seven, and arrived there at ten.  

           〔接続詞andを取り、arrived arrivingに。〕 

          The train left Tokyo at seven, arriving there at ten.                      

           電車は7時に東京を出て、10時にそこに着いた。) 

    〔例6When the boy was left alone, he began to cry.  

           〔接続詞Whenを取り、wasbeingに。後の文の主語hethe boyにする。〕 

          [Being] Left alone, he began to cry. (過去分詞の前の[Being] は省略できる。) 

ひとりきりにされると、少年は泣き出した。)                                                              

 

    ○分詞構文の種類 

     (1)主語が1種類だけで、前後の主語が一致しているものを「分詞構文」という。 

           ・Being honest, he is loved by everyone. (=As he is honest, he is loved by everyone.) 

      ・Admitting what he says, I still think he is wrong. 

(=Though I admit what he says, I still think he is wrong.) 

          ・Dogs, (being) trained properly, can help blind people. 

  (=Dogs can help blind people if they are trained properly.)

 

     (2前後の主語が一致しないものを「独立分詞構文」という。 

            ・Tom being sick, I called the doctor. (=As Tom was sick, I called the doctor.) 

            ・Lucy having been impolite, the teacher is scolding her now. 

                  (=As Lucy was[has been] impolite, the teacher is scolding her now.) 

            ・Night coming on, we returned home. (=As night came on, we returned home.) 

            ・There being no bus service, we had to walk for ten miles. 

(=As there were no bus service, we had to walk for ten miles.)

 

     (3)前後の主語が一致していないのに、一方の主語が省略されたものを

              「非人称独立分詞構文」という。 

             ・Frankly speaking, you are too afraid of mistakes.

                 (率直に言って、君は失敗を恐れすぎる。 

             ・Judging from the look of the sky, it may rain this evening.

  (空模様から判断すると、今日の夕方は雨かもしれない。  

              Generally speaking   一般的に言って  =If we speak generally 

Strictly speaking      厳密に言って     =If we speak strictly 

Practically speaking    実際的には      =If we speakpractically 

Roughly speaking     大雑把に言って  =If we speak roughly   

Frankly speaking     率直に言うと

     =If we speak frankly / To be frank with you / Frankly (speaking) 

Moderately speaking控えめに言って 

Judging from~                      から判断すると    =If we judge from ~

Seeing [that]+文       ~ところをみると・なので            

              Assúming [that]+文    ~とすれば

    ☞Supposed that SV. はない。(cf限定用法の形容詞Supposed ~推定上の 

注意Suppose that SV 〔命令形で〕  ~と仮定してみよう・したらどうだろう・しようではないか/            〔従属節で〕  もし~だとしても・もし~だとしたら 

Suppose (that) SV.〔命令形で〕と仮定してみよう・したらどうだろう・しようではないか

/ Suppose (that) SV, S’V’.〔従属節で〕もし~だとしたら 

(cf)Suppose I do.もしそうだとしたら、どうだというのだ。 / suppose SV ~と仮定する

      ○「付帯状況+」について:「主文(A), 分詞句(B) 

      ①BしながらAする:The old man got into a taxi, (being)assisted by a driver. 

           老人はドライバーの手を借りてタクシーに乗り込んだ。 

      ②Bして、(そして)Aする: 

   Opening the box, she took out some toys.箱を開けて、おもちゃを取り出した。 

      ③Aして、(その結果)Bする:The typhoon hit the town, causing a lot of damage. 

     (台風が町を襲い、大きな被害をもたらした。 

○分詞構文の表す意味を明らかにするために、「接続詞+分詞構文」の形にすることがある。 

      (ただし、「理由」を表す場合を除く。) 

     ・While having lunch, they talked about the matter.  

  (ランチをとりながら、彼らはその問題について話し合った。 

      ・Though being busy all day, I helped him take care of his sons. 

      ○分詞構文ではないが、動名詞・現在分詞・過去分詞を使った次の表現に注意:  

   ①On/Upon ~ing

         (=As soon as SV, … / No sooner had pp. ~ than… / Hardly/Scarcely…when/before…) 

     On seeing me, he ran away.  

In~ing (=When SV) In see me, he went away. (=When he saw me, he went away.)  

   ③with +名詞+ [p.p. or ~ing]付帯状況・した状態で・された状態で 

        with one’s arms folded 腕組みをして  (=with folded arms)

        with one’s eyes closed目を閉じて

        with one’s eyes fixed on a point 1点に目が釘付けになって 

        with one’s hair waving 髪をなびかせて

        with one’s legs crossed脚を組んで 

 with one’s mouth full口に物をほおばって 

        with one’s hat on帽子をかぶったまま 

        with you standing there君がそこに立っていると 

        with a pipe in one’s mouthパイプをくわえて  

 with one’s knees knocking (together)膝をがくがくして(恐怖・寒さで)

 with one’s sister on his back 背中に載せて・担いで

    名詞と分詞との間が能動関係のときは、現在分詞を使う。受動関係のときは過去分詞を使う。

   with + O + p.p. / with + O + ~ing /with + O +adj. / with + O + adv. / with + O + prep.など

   ④現在分詞・過去分詞 

       There is a parade going by. パレードが通りぎている。 

There is a sound heard in the distance. 遠くの方で音が聞こえる。 

Standing as it does on the hill, … この通り、丘の上に立っているので 

 

【問題】次の文を分詞構文に書き換えなさい。                              

  (1) As Lucy had seen him before, she could found him at once. 

          _________________________before, Lucy could found him at once. 

   (以前彼に会ったことがあった______、Lucyはすぐ彼を見つけた。          

 

 (2) If it is seen from here, the rock looks like an egg. 

         ________________________, the rock looks like an egg. [beingは省略できる]

   (ここから見ると、その岩は卵________________。
